Music for the opening

The music we will be creating for our project will hopefully mimic the sort of tune you would hear in a musical jewelry box.

The first music I made used a lot of violins/cellos and light piano notes over low piano notes to create an effectively creepy and cinematic sound.
Our next task with music is to make it somehow build suspense.
I had the idea to make the sounds of thunder at erratic times as a lot of the flashes appear on screen.
The sound will hopefully mimic something like this (without the voice):

perhaps it could be somewhat darker than that, but involving the same sort of tune.

Location ideas

For our location our initial idea is to film the majority, if not entirety, in a forest area of some sort.
I had an idea to shoot in the nearby public woodland area in my village.
This could be perfect because of it's dense tree covered area, that at most points is generally empty, except for the occasional dog-walker.
I have shot a video there myself and it worked out fine because nobody asked any questions. Plus I know pratically everyone in my village and they know me, so nothing would look out-of-the-ordinary.

Pitching idea

A film called "kinetic"

a mechanic makes little toys and gadgets to set off chain reactions to kill his victims much like a fuse.

in the opening sequence a small kinetic toy filmed on the floor with titles written on objects in the shot. music is mixed with diagetic sound of toy.

Pitching ideas

I had some ideas from a music video I'd watched recently:

In the way the people are dressed as living Marionette dolls I think is effectively creepy for a thriller movie.

I was thinking we could have a murderer who likes to leave his victims hanging from trees much like the way a Marionette dolls would hang (much like in this video)

The titles could be broken up by flashes and distorted imagery of one of the deaths occuring. So we could see a struggle but in a distorted, effective way. Then at the end we could have the titles appear on screen and zoom in, then when the music finishes we could see a body hanging from the tree and zoom it out.
The music could retain the sort of tune at the very beginning of the music video. It could be really quiet at first and then eventually get louder and louder by the time the titles actually appear on screen.

Opening Credit Ideas

(Ginger Snaps opening: 2000)

I like the disorientated feeling you get from watching this opening sequence. Though it tells you certainly that it is fake from the beginning, between flashes you are given moving clips as well as still shots which I think is a really effective way to make the audience feel somewhat disorientated.
I like the constant flashes and the way the camera is very rarely steady. Plus the dark colour schemes and old film effect also makes this a very good opening sequence.

(Fight Club opening: 1999)

I like the way the opening sequence, while looking so random at first glance, does eventually link to the rest of the film. This sequence is meant to represent a human's neurological system in the brain and then the film turns out to be about split personality. I also like how this opening to very smooth and holds to a certain colour scheme.

I had an idea to combine the constant flashes and changing of shots in Ginger Snaps with the smoothness is Fight club.

ideas

im interested in making a sequence that follows some sort of mechanism, i get really transfixed by chain reactions of dominoes and things like that.

i liked this as an idea aswell, might give a sinister feel to use toys to portray the story at the start of the film, perhaps combined with the mechanism idea.

seven

Really good effects between clips. The music was quite simple and quiet but was effective to set an earie scene. Close ups of hands doing tasks and strong lighting sometimes gives same feel as special effects.

Student Work

The editing in this is good, especially at the end. a good feel of disoriantation is given to the audience. Dark shots and high contrast shoots at to suspence and mystery of the sequence.

I like the echo effect of some of the footage. Music was nice but not thrillery.

Washy effect of title text was effective over unactive background shoots, altogether too repetative and long. Although might be desired effect.

Title sequences of blockbusters

We compared the difference of extrememly graphic intensive sequences with simple ones

there is a dramatic difference between structuring the story in the opening sequence and exaggerating the title of the film

Beethoven's Forgotten Symphony

This video was made using Final Cut (Movie) and Garageband (Soundtrack/Music)

Combining Garage band and Final Cut

I edited footage using final cut and added fictionl titles, exported this footage into garage band and then uploaded the music composed to final cut again to make a final version.
