feedback

We got feedback from our class where we watched each others thriller projects. We got told that the thriller opening was effective in black and white. Also the fact that to begin with you didnt see the faces of the killer or the vicitm was effective and made the opening more mysterious and adds suspence for the audience.
We were told the music was good however it could of been far smoother and was too jolty and it didnt fit with eachother parts of the music were too different from eachother and we should of fadded the music in and out better. We were told that the shots which were flickered and mixed together where the killer attacked the vicitm was good and effective. It made the audience feel disorientated and made them wonder what was going on.
We had two last shots of the victim being hung, feedback told us that only one was needed and the last two shots were practially the same and only one was needed to make the audience understand what was going on. It went on for too long at the end and should of just had one last effective shot zooming out of the vicitm.
Some good feedback was when at the beginning the shot of the vicitm walking towards the camera and then moves and the killer was right behind her was effective.

feedback on first roughcut.
After the feedback from our class we realised we needed to make a few changes to our sequence to improve. We are going to change the music so it is less repetitive so it starts getting upbeat when the killer attacks the victim. The feedback on the sound was good and we got comments saying it fitted in well and it being creepy etc.
Some said the camerawork was very well thought out and creates tension well which is what we wanted to create, also they said the use of angles and shots were good. We need to edit some shots so they are shorter so its less boring and repetitive for the audience.
The editing was more positive and we got told that it looks nearly finished with good effects which create a good atmosphere.

Final name of thriller

We chose to call it Marionette which follows in with the story of the killer wanting to hang the girl like a marionette. We used the writing text called Porcelain to use for the title which appears at the end of the thriller sequence. I chose to fade it in and out slowly for a dramatice creepy effect and also it gives the audience time to read it properly and remember the name of the thriller.

Final music

We finished our music for our thriller title sequence. We first went through a few sounds which we thought will match our sound of the idea/atmosphere we wanted to create. We added quite a few sounds such a emotional piano, percusiion and strings. We added a few sounds in different sequences to see how it all sounded. We edited it until we were happy with our final sound. When we have filmed what we have needed we will maybe edit the music again until it fits in with the film and everything is in time with one another. We asked someone who wasnt in our group to see what ideas they thought coulod help us and whether or not they thought it was an effective sound or not. We got mostly positive feedback and we are happy with our final piece of music.

Credit text

After researching text from defont.com we chose some font that we thought would be useful and effective with our thriller. We wrote what we wanted in our credits such as who produced the musicedited the sequence etc. We wrote the names of the cast in Porcelain which is the writing we chose from the previous website. We wrote what they had done in the thriller sequence such as the music or filming in smaller arial text. We saved it in Photoshop and once we film our sequence we plan to add the text on top of the film once edited. Depending on the colour and darkness on the screen we will then chose what colour the text to be, however we are expecting it to be quite a dark thriller sequence so the writing will most likely be white.

opening test effects

We went into Longroad woods and filmed some test footage. We then chose a few clips to edit and test some shots on final cut. We tryed using ripple, invert, stop motion blur, displace and slowed down speed. I found the stop motion blur and displace most effective, the blur was good but i didnt think it was effective with what we may need in the final opening titles. We added titles over the clip that was being played of what effect was being used.

Costume Ideas

The plan is to have only two characters in the whole opening; The Victim and The Killer

The victim will be a female and in the first part of the opening would be wearing something relatively normal, nothing particularly special.

However for the final shot of the victim hanging from the tree her outfit will have changed (the killer's doing) into a style of dress, looking back to the video before, in which the generalised idea came from, it would be in a similar style to hers.

Something a little like this (but in grey):

The Killer would be dressed in all black. This would be easy and you would never see his face due to the chaos and disorientation of the opening sequence. It would be sort of like a typical murderer disguised against the dark.

Music for the opening

The music we will be creating for our project will hopefully mimic the sort of tune you would hear in a musical jewelry box.

The first music I made used a lot of violins/cellos and light piano notes over low piano notes to create an effectively creepy and cinematic sound.
Our next task with music is to make it somehow build suspense.
I had the idea to make the sounds of thunder at erratic times as a lot of the flashes appear on screen.
The sound will hopefully mimic something like this (without the voice):

perhaps it could be somewhat darker than that, but involving the same sort of tune.

Location ideas

For our location our initial idea is to film the majority, if not entirety, in a forest area of some sort.
I had an idea to shoot in the nearby public woodland area in my village.
This could be perfect because of it's dense tree covered area, that at most points is generally empty, except for the occasional dog-walker.
I have shot a video there myself and it worked out fine because nobody asked any questions. Plus I know pratically everyone in my village and they know me, so nothing would look out-of-the-ordinary.

Pitching idea

A film called "kinetic"

a mechanic makes little toys and gadgets to set off chain reactions to kill his victims much like a fuse.

in the opening sequence a small kinetic toy filmed on the floor with titles written on objects in the shot. music is mixed with diagetic sound of toy.

Pitching ideas

I had some ideas from a music video I'd watched recently:

In the way the people are dressed as living Marionette dolls I think is effectively creepy for a thriller movie.

I was thinking we could have a murderer who likes to leave his victims hanging from trees much like the way a Marionette dolls would hang (much like in this video)

The titles could be broken up by flashes and distorted imagery of one of the deaths occuring. So we could see a struggle but in a distorted, effective way. Then at the end we could have the titles appear on screen and zoom in, then when the music finishes we could see a body hanging from the tree and zoom it out.
The music could retain the sort of tune at the very beginning of the music video. It could be really quiet at first and then eventually get louder and louder by the time the titles actually appear on screen.

Opening Credit Ideas

(Ginger Snaps opening: 2000)

I like the disorientated feeling you get from watching this opening sequence. Though it tells you certainly that it is fake from the beginning, between flashes you are given moving clips as well as still shots which I think is a really effective way to make the audience feel somewhat disorientated.
I like the constant flashes and the way the camera is very rarely steady. Plus the dark colour schemes and old film effect also makes this a very good opening sequence.

(Fight Club opening: 1999)

I like the way the opening sequence, while looking so random at first glance, does eventually link to the rest of the film. This sequence is meant to represent a human's neurological system in the brain and then the film turns out to be about split personality. I also like how this opening to very smooth and holds to a certain colour scheme.

I had an idea to combine the constant flashes and changing of shots in Ginger Snaps with the smoothness is Fight club.

ideas

im interested in making a sequence that follows some sort of mechanism, i get really transfixed by chain reactions of dominoes and things like that.

i liked this as an idea aswell, might give a sinister feel to use toys to portray the story at the start of the film, perhaps combined with the mechanism idea.

seven

Really good effects between clips. The music was quite simple and quiet but was effective to set an earie scene. Close ups of hands doing tasks and strong lighting sometimes gives same feel as special effects.

Student Work

The editing in this is good, especially at the end. a good feel of disoriantation is given to the audience. Dark shots and high contrast shoots at to suspence and mystery of the sequence.

I like the echo effect of some of the footage. Music was nice but not thrillery.

Washy effect of title text was effective over unactive background shoots, altogether too repetative and long. Although might be desired effect.

Title sequences of blockbusters

We compared the difference of extrememly graphic intensive sequences with simple ones

there is a dramatic difference between structuring the story in the opening sequence and exaggerating the title of the film
